Teacher Evaluation:

As a teacher, I would love to read this book to students from grades kindergarten to 6th grade. I think this poetry book is a great example of diversity that is becoming more prominent in children's books now a days. Which is something beneficial for students of all ages to see themselves depicted in the the books they read.

Summary:

In this book the author writes a collection of poems about girls who feel sad, happy, scared, and powerful. As well as girls who love their bodies or don't, city girls and country girls, girls who love their mom, and girls that wish they had a dad.  One of the poems included is called "I am a Canvas" which is about a girl who feels her families, friends, and communities words whether they're hurtful, loving, or supportive being painted on. She describes how sometimes the words leave her feeling confused or feeling blue with the urge to just scream. It ends with her saying that pinks and purples flow over her canvas that make her feel hopeful for a better and different tomorrow. Then another poem in the book is "You" which is about a girl who's looking at a garden of flowers and saying if you were a flower she'd pick you. She knows you are special so she'd put you in a beautiful bouquet that will make her day.
