Teacher Evaluation:
As a teacher, I would read this book but most likely as a fun read-aloud. It's because I wouldn't say there's much of a lesson being taught with this book besides having patience when waiting for things to grow. I think kindergarteners through second graders would really enjoy this book because it's a funny twist on the original Jack and the Beanstalk story.
Summary:
In this book we meet Jack and his mother who are struggling to find food to eat, so Jack's mom sends him off to go sell the cow for as much as they'll but it for. Instead of coming back with money Jack comes back with three magical beans which his mom throws out the window. The next morning a giant beanstalk has grown which is beneficial because now they have food to eat. But after a while Jack grows tired of having to eat beans for every meal. Then so does everyone else in his town because they are all eating beans as well and the kids at school start to bully and chase Jack about how he never should have planted the beans. So one day as he's about it cut down the beanstalk the man who gave him the beans comes and stops him and asks if he's not curious about what's up there. So Jack decides to climb the beanstalk especially when he sees a mob of angry townspeople headed towards him. Once he reaches the top he sees a castle and heads towards it in search of food. Once he's inside the castle he stumbles upon a giant women who warns Jack of her husband who is ten times bigger than her and that he should hide. When her husband comes in and sees that he's eating beans again he is not excited and says what he wouldn't do for a plate of french fries just like Jack. After both the Giant and Jack create a mess in the kitchen because they want anything but beans Mrs. Giant tells them if they want potatoes or really anything else why don't they plant it themselves! The story ends with the Giant going down the beanstalk with Jack to plant a garden with potatoes, tomatoes, corn, and carrots. At the end of the story the Giant and Jack both get what they've been craving fries!
