How I became a Pirate
Title: How I became a Pirate
Genre: Fiction
Author: Melinda Long
Awards: Indies Choice Book Award: Children's Illustrated
Age Group: 3 to 7 year olds
Teacher Evaluation:
As a teacher, I think this book would be a cute read-aloud book it teaches that while sometimes you may want to grow up because you don't love someone telling you what to do doesn't mean you won't miss it. It's a pretty quick read with cute illustrations throughout the audio and even singing which I think the kids would like. After reading the book a fun little activity could be to make/draw a pirate outfit.
Summary:
We see that Jeremy Jacob is in the beach with his family and then he sees some pirates come by and he decides to say yes to their invitation of joining their ship. That's when he knows he's become a pirate and as a pirate he notices al of the things he can do now that now one is telling him not to do something. Then while he's still on the ship he starts playing soccer with the pirates and it goes overboard and into the water where a shark is swimming. After a while he starts realizing that maybe being a pirate isn't for him because when he can't go to sleep n one will tuck him, read a book, or give him a good night kiss. After realizing how scary it can be to be a pirate because of a storm he decides he doesn't want to be one anymore. They go get the treasure and go back to land to bury the treasure and Jeremy stays back because he has soccer practice and the pirates tell him that they are just a call away.
