The cart that carried Martin

Title: The cart that carried Martin

Genre: Historical Fiction

Author: Eve Bunting

Awards: N/A

Age Group: 6 to 9 year olds

Teacher Evaluation:

As a teacher, I think this book would be a good book for students to read because it shows something related to Dr. King that I hadn't even known about, the cart that pulled him during his funeral. It gives us a feeling of how people felt after he was taken and how they knew that the missions he was fighting for weren't finished yet. That is something inspirational that I think the students would benefit from reading.

Summary:

In this book we see a cart on the streets by an antiques store that nobody wanted because of how old it looked with its faded paint. These men want to buy it but every time they come by the store is closed so instead they just decided to borrow it and just bring ti back once they're done with it. There is great sadness at this man's funeral and great sadness as the mules carry him in the coffin which is on the cart being drawn by two mules that symbolize freedom. There's a second service at Morehouse College with a big crowd as well and then the coffin is carried out and placed in a hearse that is headed to the cemetery. Then the mules and the cart are returned because their job was done. The cart had so many offers to buy it but instead it was sold to the king family and places in the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site where people from all places come to visit it.
