The Water Princess
Title: The Water Princess
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Author: Susan Verde
Awards: ALA Award for Notable Children's books
Age Group: 5 to 8 year olds
Teacher Evaluation:
As a teacher, I think this book would be a good eye-opening book to read. It shows that sometimes people have to journey hard and long for things we can find a minute away. This shows such an important lesson for young children because sometimes it may be easy to forget how fortunate we are here with things so close in reach.
Summary:
In this book we meet Princess Gie Gie her kingdom is the African sky and she can tame the wild dogs with her song, make the tall grass sway with her dance, and can make the wind play hide-and-seek but the one thing she can't do is bring the water closer. She is woken up by her mother early the next day so they can go get some water. She doesn't want to get up to go walk to the water so she tries to command it once again but nothing happens. When the finally reach the water she sees all her friends and their maman's, while she plays with her friends her maman waits in line. They finally get their water so it's now time to make the journey back home as the sun is going to bed. As she's getting ready to sleep her maman brings her one last glass of water she saved for her before they journey to the water again tomorrow. Gie Gie goes to sleep dreaming about cool-crystal clear water flowing closer to her.
